William (1957, ref 1) が提唱したとされている（2）。若いうちに適応度の増大をもたらす遺伝子が，のちに老化を促進する機能を示すために，老化は進化の過程で淘汰されないという考え方である。

ただし，Kirkwood 2005a (3) では，「若いうちには有利で，のちに老化を促進してしまう遺伝子」の実例はほとんどないと述べられている。
